By this year’s wine harvest the new building complex of the Hungarian Esterházy Etyeki Kúria Winery has opened its doors to the public.

Esterházy Etyeki Kuria Winery is one of the leading wineries in the famous Hungarian wine region of Etyek. The site is situated on the picturesque slope of Öreghegy, which is characterized by little, pretty pressing houses between the rows of grapes.

Therefore the main concept of the design was to adjust the new building complex both to the unique manmade world and the amazing nature. The volume of the new complex integrating the existing cellar and pressing house reflects the characteristic scale of the surrounding buildings in a new interpretation.

The new mass of the winery with the gable roofs on it, standing in line next to each other playfully, provides a contemporary character to the house. The gate of the new building complex is marked by an emphatic line of trees crossing the access way of the hill.

Parallel with the trees a little protected entrance bay welcomes the visitors in front of the building. The vestibule of the visitors’ centre, the wine shop and the open and sunny hall of wine tasting merge with the view deck and the vineyard which embraces the building contour.

The energetic external appearance is perceptible from inside as well. The rhythmical sequence of airy and narrow spaces with different heights and proportion provides an exciting experience for the visitors.

Due to the carefully arranged huge glass surfaces, the long slot lights, the open tympanums and the relationship between the different areas, sunshine permeates the whole building.

Spaces for the public open views to the production process of the grapes, to the bottling house and to the depth of the cellar alike. As a result of playing with the light, the warmth of the sun that is essential to life is perceptible in the heart of the winery and in the fermentation areas as well.

The building is exemplary not only in using quality materials, in the design of details but it is also environmentally responsible since its heating and cooling are solved by renewable energy resources.

Preserving the deep cultural and social roots of the place and considering the high functional demands, the new centre of Esterházy Etyeki Kúria Winery still has an attractive, fresh appearance and hereby truly reflects the profession of the acknowledged winery.

BULGARI WINERY BY ALVISI KIRIMOTO + PARTNERS

The vineyards are located at Palazzone at San Casciano dei Bagni, the most Southern tip of Tuscany, where hills, streams and wind create an outrageous natural climate to produce unique wines.

Only in these authentic places, where the summers are still hot and the winters freezing, and with mild springs and autumns and little snow, it is possible to have the ideal conditions for the vines to ripe at its best.

The soil - wich is composed by clay, limestone, sandstones and fossils - and has a sunny South-Eastern exposure of the vineyard make, combined with the altitude, give well-structured elegant wines. Through a long corridor one gets access to all the production premises, from the vinification, maceration to the aging of the wines to all agricultural activities.

The tasting room, with its incomparable view on the entire valley, allows to complete the experience. Gardens and terraces surround and complete the wine cellar which was conceived by Alvisi, Kirimoto & Partners.

“The elegance, structure and precision of the vineyards led me to a design that bespoke of the territory: four reinforced concrete walls that follow the maximum slope of the hill from which the building emerges. The walls enclose the main programs of the winery and thus differ from each other in both length and interstitial width.

At the center, there runs a corridor which splits the principal processing area, the barrel cellar, and the wine cellar from the main bottling area and the storage for oenological products. Whereas, in the upper level, the corridor divides the tasting room from the office spaces, aside from establishing a main circulation route. This main axis also serves as a means to connect the top level of the offices with the exterior” says Massimo Alvisi.

The cellar exploits geothermal power, thus the constant temperature of the earth, exploited as a natural energy source, along with the very thick walls and by the structure of the cellar that follows morphologically the ground.

Solar panels and simple construction devices enhance the sustainability concept which was a real mission to Giovanni Bulgari. The cellar, in its sienna-coloured tone, is perfectly integrated into the landscape, and uses its energy in an non-invasive way.

Today Podernuovo, is a contemporary winery with the ambition to bring its carbon footprint - the emission of carbon dioxide - close to zero, by continuous research and total commitment to finding the best solutions for the environment.

The 42 acres of vineyards at PoderNuovo were planted in 2007. The Bulgaris also turned to one of Italy’s best-known oenologists Riccardo Cotarella, Wine Oscars 2013 as the best enologist, to put his stamp on the three vintage 2009 wines going on the market: a Tuscan red blend, a cabernet franc and a Sangiovese, the indigenous grape of central Italy.

DARIEN WINERY BY JESÚS MARINO PASCUAL

Jesús Marino Pascual

The inspiration sprang from the Rioja vineyards themselves “…where the succession of ridges and hillocks means that man has had to create an endless mesh of vines separated from each other by slopes and steep banks... from these banks emerge rocks, stones with sharp edges which have not yet been worn smooth by the wind.

Jesús Marino Pascual

Thus, continuing with this analogy, in the steep bank above the vineyard, from the hillock which overlooks it, the bodega rises up, appearing like a jagged wall of big boulders revolving around each other and letting past the light.

Jesús Marino Pascual

Between the blocks, between the faces, there are huge hidden panes of glass illuminating spaces and areas which are never conventional”.

Jesús Marino Pascual

The goal of design is to integrate the work with the landscape, blurring the boundaries. The building is not designed for mimicry, but as an allusion to the geography of the place.

Jesús Marino Pascual

To achieve this, the building appears to be sinking into the ground, to cover and store wines and is open to the outside in areas that need light. Thus, most of the building appears buried, maintaining the continuity of the mantle of plants and striking a balance between thermal and acoustical.

Jesús Marino Pascual

The building is designed in such a way to get the view of the vineyards. Formally, it causes a set of overlapping volumes. Straight lines and volumes, inspired by the vineyard itself, are used. It does not possess a single facade, but many different ones depending on the location of the observer. The work in 3 dimensions was key in the design.

Jesús Marino Pascual

Functionally, the winery meets certain requirements for wine making. In addition, the building houses a number of services ready for full use around the wine, because apart from the winery itself, it has a restaurant, a convention hall, a tasting room and work spaces designed for subsequent visits.

Jesús Marino Pascual

The cellars are buried. From the foyer there is a serene view over the vineyards and the valley of the Ebro, which contrasts with the apparent disarray of dimensions outside. The entries will cause light at the junction between volumes.

Jesús Marino Pascual

The entries of the light, forms and spaces, mixed and interconnected, provide a spatial continuity that flows carefully. Another area worth noting is the room - Museum of the History of Ceramics in La Rioja. This is a room designed and built specifically to house the collection. The idea was to achieve enlightenment in the parts of the collection, without casting a shadow over another and outlining the shapes of the vessels.

Jesús Marino Pascual

For this, two truncated pyramids overlap and allow the two gallery floors. The route on the outer mantle will discover the barrels were buried through the triangular skylights that emerge from the ground.
