STATION CITY STOCKHOLM BY 3XN

360 degrees gentle adjustment

Station City Stockholm will be located centrally in Stockholm, right opposite the Central Station. The building is multifunctional consisting of a subway station, a hotel, a conference center and apartments.

The starting point for building’s design is a wish for a respectful and considerate adaptation to the surrounding urban environment. By splitting the building volume into four smaller sections of varying heights, the building is able to make a 360 degree adjustment to the scale and expression to the adjacent streets and buildings.

Green Roof Terraces

Three of the four building volumes will have green roof terraces. One will be publicly accessible and will also have a Sky Bar. From here visitors will experience a stunning view of Sweden’s capital.

The other two will belong to the respectively the hotel and the apartments. In the lower level, the public arcade will have access to the underlying subway, locally known as Citybanan. The facade will be shaped as a relief, resulting in an expression that will vary depending on the angle it is viewed from. 

Building on Tradition

Both in terms of material and expression Station City Stockholm will have clear references to the traditions and distinctive features characterizing Stockholm's architecture. Also, 3XN seeks to use quality materials, which are typical for Stockholm's architecture.

3XN WINS UNIVERSITY BUILDING COMPETITION

It is the ambition that the new building for the technical faculty of the German university Duale Hochschule Baden-Württemberg (DHBW) is to be a lighthouse project for academic learning - an innovative and productive learning environment in which students, teachers and industry representatives can meet.

 

Transparency and communication have been key concepts in 3XN's winning project, which is designed as a "vertical campus" to support the university's goals of self-awareness, innovation, functionality and profitability. The future-oriented faculty building symbiotically gathers a number of institutions that until now have been scattered around Stuttgart.

The building is located close to Stuttgart city centre in an area characterized by a variety of universities and educational institutions, residential buildings and green spaces, giving potential for the building to support a rich and active urban life. The building enhances this potential by leaving room for new urban spaces in the form of three squares, which e.g. will allow the university café to have an outdoor dining area.

The pentagonal building has an open and transparent facade divided into a number of horizontal bands, which have been split thus marking the main entrances and producing cantilevers and both open and covered terrace. This feature gives the building identity and a sculptural expression.

The central atrium in the building’s center has a number of functions: it is a social meeting place, which also facilitates orientation for the building’s users and visitors. Along with the spiral staircase that goes all the way to the top floor, the atrium further creates vertical communication between all levels and functions.

An important element for social interaction is the "bridge" - a connecting element for all three main entrances, which because of its central location also can be used as a general passage. The room division of the individual floors is designed in order to ensure that each room has as many applications as possible and can be used across the various disciplines being taught. Several spaces facing the atrium have been left open to ensure informal and social meeting spaces.

Delivering as One

Bringing together the various agencies and functions of the United Nations regional offices in Copenhagen, the new Head Office is located at the northern harbour of Copenhagen.

3XN’s star shaped design reflects the nature of each UN unit working independently, efficiently and professionally with clear roots in a mutual set of values - Delivering as One.

Balancing Openness and Security

High security and accessibility standards have been central considerations in the design of the new Head Office.

The UN City must live up to the most stringent requirements, providing a protected and safe environment, while at the same time appearing open and accommodating to the city.

It has therefore been a key part of the design to ensure that the high security level does not become the dominating feeling when entering the building. Instead security and openness should be experienced as two aspects of the same coin.

The atrium is the centre of daily life offering visual and physical connections across floors and units in a space full of natural daylight and a central staircase.

All office levels have an open and flexible layout permitting interaction as well as individual immersion. Work stations are ensured plenty of daylight and a good indoor climate.

Sustainability at all Levels

The work environment is further improved by an overall health policy including green recreational areas and a number of sustainable features.

Hence, the UN City is expected to become one of Denmark’s most energy efficient buildings with an annual energy consumption of less than 50 KwH per m2.

The UN City is registered with the LEED sustainability ratings system with the certification goal of minimum LEED® Gold.

INAUGURATED THE BRIDGE'S “BUEN” CULTURAL CENTRE BY 3XN

The bridge which is part of the master plan for a new and attractive city area for Mandal, which also features the cultural centre "Buen", has just been completed.

The pedestrian bridge crosses the river and connects the cultural centre with the local community.

The bridge's soft movement interacts with the materials and shape of the cultural centre and binds the city's two parts together.

Both the bridge and the cultural centre have a white and light expression, which corresponds to the surrounding area’s white wooden houses, picturesque narrow streets, water, beach and forest.

The bridge makes a slight curve and two pockets which invites to be used as open spaces and is intended as a social meeting place where the view of Norway's southernmost city can be enjoyed to the fullest.

The elegant and smooth movement of the bridge plays in terms of shape and material perfectly together with the cultural centre and connects the two city parts.

Both the bridge and the cultural center are white and light in the expression and drawn in a design context with the surrounding areas.

In order to achieve the best possible vantage points from both land and water the bridge and the cultural centre are placed slightly offset so that the bridge makes a flow round the cultural centre.

IMAX THEATRE BY 3XN ARCHITECTS

A 3XN designed IMAX theatre, retail and creative offices complex will be an iconic contribution to the 15 billion yuan (USD$2.4 billion) DreamCenter entertainment district on Shanghai’s West Bund.

The area near the 2010 Shanghai Expo site in the city's west will also include the headquarters of animation production company Oriental DreamWorks, a joint venture between DreamWorks and Chinese partners.

The DreamCenter is being developed by DreamWorks Animation together with partners, CMC Capital Partners and Hong Kong developer Lan Kwai Fong Group. The "DreamCenter," will open in 2017 and will have a 500-seat IMAX cinema.

3XN received a brief for the IMAX theatre, retail and creative offices highlighting the importance of a red carpet experience, incorporating a Shanghai version of the Spanish steps which will be used for Film Premieres, Festivals and Cultural Events.

The 15-hectare (40-acre) site includes eight outdoor events plazas. The project gives Shanghai an opportunity to diversify beyond its status as a financial and manufacturing center by adding media and cultural industries.

The Creative Offices will attract the most innovative and creative firms in the arts and media, contributing to the energy and buzz throughout the DreamCenter site.
