CHAUSSEESTRASSE 43 BY DANIEL LIBESKIND

With large angular windows designed to catch maximum light, canted walls, and a metallic-coated ceramic façade, the 107,000 sq. ft. (10,000 m2) Chausseestrasse 43 occupies the corner of a block in central Berlin.

 

Daniel Libeskind’s challenge was to create 73 desirable one- to four-bedroom apartments on a more or less rectangular plot a little less than half an acre (16,000 sq. ft.), accommodating attractive retail on the ground floor, underground parking, and a common outdoor area. 

The architect achieved this and more.  The dramatic coda is found at the top, where a penthouse apartment, perched on the prow of the building, embodies the ultimate in inside/outside urban living. 

Here, a double-height living room is lined on one side by a sloping wall of obliquely shaped windows, which leads out to a patio overlooking Berlin.  A floating stairway ascends to an open-plan living area, bedrooms are tucked into the rear, and the ceiling sweeps up to a height of ­21 feet.

The façade cladding is an innovative three-dimensional stoneware tile that Libeskind designed with the Italian company Casalgrande Padana. The geometric ceramic panels not only create an expressive metallic pattern, but they possess surprising sustainable properties such as air purification and they are self-cleaning.

This cathedral for modern living occupies a piece of land where the Wulffersche iron factory once operated before being expropriated from its Jewish owners during World War II.

KÖ-BOGEN BY DANIEL LIBESKIND

Kö-Bogen, currently under construction, is a six-story 432,300-square-foot office and retail complex in downtown Düsseldorf and marks an important transition between urban space and landscape.

 

Two city blocks will be joined with one continuous roof line, forming a unified space for walking, shopping and working.

The building will also create a connected space between the Schadowplatz, a pedestrian street, and the Hofgarten, the central park in Düsseldorf.

A two-story connecting bridge with roof terrace will connect the east and west blocks of Kö-Bogen and between the two blocks will be green courtyards, which will alsp provide generous daylight to the interior spaces.

Permeated cuts into Kö-Bogen itself will allow for the landscape to naturally blend and flow into the building space.

The green courtyards and green roof become part of a new environment that bridges urban space with park space, a fitting entryway to and from the Hofgarten.

ZHANG ZHIDONG AND MODERN INDUSTRIAL MUSEUM BY DANIEL LIBESKIND

Zhang Zhidong was a 19th century leader in government who inspired the move towards modernization that established the steel industry in Wuhan.

He also was responsible for city planning with industrial, cultural and financial districts that compose the contemporary city of Wuhan.

The steel industry in Wuhan was a model for China and the world. At the turn of the 20th century Wuhan was at the center of the nation connected by railroads to all the provinces of China.

The story of the city of Wuhan is narrated by its aspirations for the future inspired by the unique history of the past. The Xinhai Revolution, in October, 1911, was a remarkable moment in that crystallized the modernization started by Zhang Zhidong and carried forward by modern industry.

The Zhang Zhidong and Modern Industrial Museum, in Wuhan, was designed to balance three narrative themes within an integrated building and landscape.

Each of the three floors of the museum is committed to one theme; Zhang Zhidong, industry, and the city of Wuhan.

The highest peak of the museum has a view toward the city. The museum floors look toward the garden which is composed of radiating lines and rings to connect past and future.

The museum floors and the garden are united by the spherical geometry of the building form. The project is currently under construction and will be completed at the end of 2014.

ZLOTA BY DANIEL LIBESKIND AWARDED WITH THE EUROPEAN MEDAL

ZLOTA has been awarded with the European Medal – Polish nationwide initiative undertaken by the European Economic and Social Committee in Brussels, Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and private entrepreneurs association – Business Centre Club.

The European Medal is awarded to products meeting European standards. It has been granted for 13 years with the list of its laureates including biggest Polish manufacturers, banks, financial and insurance institutions, leaders of construction industry, IT and telecommunication companies as well as universities and media.

“We are extremely pleased to be one of the prestigious winners of the European Medal. Złota takes a special place in Orco’s portfolio. It is a unique project on a European level. The 192-metre-high building designed by Daniel Libeskind is the highest purely residential skyscraper in the European Union.

BEYOND THE WALL BY DANIEL LIBESKIND

DanielLibeskind  presenta l’istallazione “Beyond the Wall” nel seicentesco Cortile d’Onore dell’ Università Statale nell’ambito della mostra Hybrid/Metissage Architecture & Design Exhibition promossa da INTERNI durante il FuoriSalone 2013 a Milano.

La mostra è dedicata al tema del métissage nel progetto d’architettura e di design, ed ispirata dalle osservazioni del sociologo francese Michel Wieviorka, “L’incontro tra diverse culture talvolta scatena processi d’influenza reciproca e di cambiamenti che creano forme culturali originali. Il métissage, lo scambio culturale, autorizza la produzione della differenza nell’ottica dell’incontro e della relazione tra i singoli individui, i quali vivono nell’ambivalenza dell’appartenenza a molteplici identità”.

Una mostra che rappresenta anche una occasione d’incontro tra progettisti e aziende all’avanguardia nel campo dei materiali, della tecnologia e della sostenibilità ambientale che si materializzata attraverso la realizzazione di progetti di micro-padiglioni o macro-oggetti sperimentando nuove modalità e interconnessioni relative alle incognite e ai problemi del mondo contemporaneo.

Nato da una collaborazione con il Gruppo Cosentino, specializzato nella produzione di superfici innovative per l’architettura, “Beyond the Wall” vuole rappresentare una spirale policentrica che si apre a molteplici direzioni e traiettorie

L’installazione è una struttura unica realizzata in Silestone®,  una superficie in quarzo con una finitura opaca Suede, con un motivo che dissolve la forza dei piani che, torcendosi, tendono verso l’alto come un frattale che si moltiplica assumendo forme diverse articolate.
