EXPO 2015 SERVICE AREAS BY ONSITESTUDIO

The projects defines 13 large buildings, 17 medium buildings, and 16 small units for a 64.000 sqm. gross floor area. The wood project stems from the desire of creating a space rather than a building.

It looks for an immediate relationship with scale of the architectures and of the open space with the individuation of the correct size for the unusual scale along with the desire to use a spatial principle and not a form, thus scale suggest similarities to linear systems of stoà from Mediterranean classicism.

The unit of space and structure is made evident by the use of wood as a single material, choosing not to deal with the issue of diversity rather than with the uniformity one.

The system repeats reiterating at different scales the same tapered column with median entasis, and the same slab element. In this way both biggest units (stecche) the smallest ones ( kiosks and infopoints) are composed with the same precast system.

The project with its bareness offers the charm that structures have: the lack of what binds the building to a kind of contemporarity and makes it universal, giving up with the unnecessary. This buildings have no facades but shadows.

Contesto
Il progetto della “Porta del Parco”, - un complesso di servizi integrati al turismo, primo degli interventi di trasformazione dell’ex-area industriale delle acciaierie Ilva di Bagnoli - , è nato con un ambizioso e chiaro obiettivo: creare un pezzo nuovo di città come porta d’ingresso al grande parco a mare di Bagnoli Futura.

Concept
La Porta del Parco infatti è stata concepita come un grande spazio pubblico aperto su più livelli e senza soluzione di continuità tra interno ed esterno del complesso, immaginato esso stesso come un continuum pedonale tridimensionale, “scolpito” dal sistema dei flussi di accesso ed uscita alle varie attività alle differenti quote mediante la realizzazione di grandi piani inclinati che permettono di superare progressivamente il dislivello di oltre 8 metri tra la quota della città (Via Nuova Bagnoli) e la quota del futuro parco urbano.

Programma
Il Complesso di Servizi Integrati al Turismo (dalla superficie totale di oltre 40.000 m² con circa 16.500 m² di parcheggi seminterrati) è articolato con una Mixité funzionale interessante di diverse attività, dal benessere e cura del corpo alle attività culturali e per il tempo libero. Il complesso infatti ospita oltre a due grandi piazze pubbliche, un centro benessere con Spa, piscine e fitness center di circa 7.000 m² in totale, una sala conferenze da 300 posti, uno spazio espositivo di 1.100 m², una serie di spazi polifunzionali interni ed esterni, negozi, bar, uffici, parcheggi da 600 posti...

Continuum
L’architettura del complesso è stata concepita proprio come un continuum spaziale e volumetrico utilizzando lo stesso tipo di trattamento materico ed estetico del rivestimento orizzontale in materiale ceramico grigio scuro, - clin d’oeil alla pietra vulcanica degli spazi pubblici di Napoli – anche per i rivestimenti verticali delle grandi superfici fuori terra.
Queste facciate create hanno permesso l’installazione di 960 pannelli solari (di tipo Sun Power) dirretamente integrate al rivestimento per un effeto massimo di «continuità».

Emergenze
Sole emergenze dallo scuro articolarsi nello spazio urbano dei grandi piani inclinati, le due lanterne in acciaio e vetro della sala conferenze, - un volume organico in aggetto sulla città e posata su quattro pilotis -, e della cupola di ingresso al centro benessere, rappresentano simbolicamente i due poli funzionali principali della cultura e della cura del corpo: “mens sana in corpore sano”.

La Sala conferenze

La sala della Porta del Parco è un volume compatto ed organico, totalmente trasparente rivestito da una pelle composta da “scaglie” di vetro a bassa emissività. Il volume della sala risulta sospeso sulla hall verso la strada e sul foyer/bar verso la piazza interna, che accolgono il pubblico a quota del contiuum pedonale su 2 livelli distinti.

Le grandi lastre di vetro a tutt’altezza del volume di accoglienza al pubblico sono sagomate dalle gradonate superiori della sala e dalle scale di accesso al foyer alto, wine-bar al 1° livello, aperto in affaccio sulla grande piazza del centro. La scelta di creare una sala conferenze trasparente è stata resa possibile da un accurato studio dell’acustica interna. Una serie di tubi fonoassorbenti melaminici posizionati lungo le pareti verticali della sala ha assicurato l’ottenimento di una performance acustica eccellente all’interno del volume mantenendo la massima trasparenza verso l’esterno.

Tra la pelle di vetro ed i tubi melaminici, un sistema tende scorrevoli avvolgibili in tessuto permette l’oscurabilità della sala e contribuice a creare un’ulteriore superficie assorbente alla riflessione sonora. La continuità tra palcoscenico e gradinate è ottenuta grazie al rivestimento continuo in legno al suolo e lungo tutto il controsoffitto.

Sviluppo sostenibile

Il progetto della nuova struttura del complesso polifunzionale della Porta del Parco, aperta verso il mare ed il nuovo asse attrezzato a sud e verso il panorama ed il parco ad ovest, risponde alle esigenze di risparmio energetico e di elevata qualità ambientale. L’impiego di fonti di energia alternativa ha determinato la scelta architettonica di posizionare sui due grandi fronti inclinati a sud e sud ovest delle superfici continue di pannelli in fotovoltaico monocristallino (1.420 m² circa – Sunpower di nuova generazione) che garantiscono l’auto-produzione di oltre il 20% del fabbisogno di energia elettrica giornaliera del complesso corrispondente a circa 256.000 Kwh/anno.

Il progetto prevede il recupero di acque di fonte termale da impiegare parzialmente nelle piscine trattamento del centro SPA. Le superfici vetrate utilizzate per i due volumi-lanterne sono a controllo solare e riflettente. Le scaglie in vetro della cupola sono distanziate da una lama d’aria per permettere la ventilazione naturale del volume di circolazioni verticali e degli spazi di connettivo.

CCS OF THE OUTER HARBOUR BY DÍAZ Y DÍAZ ARQUITECTOS

As the prow of a ship ready to weigh anchor and set sail, on the hammer of the main dock of the Outer Harbour of Ferrol, opened to the views of the estuary.

To meet this landscaping challenge is used a formal repertoire of pure volumetrys, integrated into the geometry of the dam itself and, secondly, they rely on the proper forms of naval architecture.

From a functional point of view, the building houses the program uses proposed by the Port Authority, allowing from its upper floors the total perimeter view of the port and the estuary. An external ramp system allows saving the difference in height between the sea wall of the dam and access to the roof.

Consequently, the priority objectives to be attained by the solution adopted are:
a) Uniqueness and representation. The building must become, in the Outer Harbour, a landmark and focus.

b) Functionality and flexibility. Both in the conception of space and structure design and facilities, the aim was versatility and adaptability for future changes as needed.

c) Intelligent building and "high tech " architecture. Provide the latest technologycal innovations, both in materials and facilities, setting an "intelligent building"and placing it within what is known as "high tech" architecture.

d) Economy, Maintenance, Exploitation. Achieve a long-term economic investment based on the construction quality and ease design, reducing maintenance and operation costs.

PASSENGER SERVICE CENTER BY URBAN OFFICE ARCHITECTURE

The Architectural Concept for the Kinmen Passenger Services Terminal, designed by Urban Office Architecture, is that of a Gate into the city. The Building ARCHES over the Park and lets it extend it underneath so that the City and the Sea are connected through the Terminal building.

From the Park, citizens can see the water and Marine activities. From the boats, passengers glimpse into the city. This creates a lively and “porous” interaction between the Terminal Building and the larger Master Plan. As a portal, the Building integrates into the waterfront landscape and green spaces, rather than acting as a blocking element between the land and the water. The underpass also proposes covered access to the adjacent Shopping and Duty Free Building and the Hotel and Convention center building. From the lower parking area visitors can take escalators to the main covered piazza underneath the building or elevators directly to the Domestic or International Wings.

The covered Piazza becomes essentially a public space, a gathering space for visitors and citizens alike. It could for instance become an ideal place for a Night Market or informal outdoor performing space. Access to the Domestic and International Wings is also allowed at the ground floor via drop off for cars, taxis and buses, as well as pedestrian access. Each Wing is located to each side of the Central Covered Piazza, forming a more distinct and organized flow of passengers. Arrivals are located at the ground level for both Domestic and International wings. Departures are located on the second level (level +12m) for both Domestic and International wings.

Direct access to the Departures occurs via the Covered Piazza through escalators or Elevators, or via each wing thorough elevators. The third Main Architectural element is the Kinmen Maritime Museum and Gallery Center. The Museum is an extension of the Terminal itself and extends as large Volume “hovering” over the park. It contains exhibition and gallery spaces as well as a café and an auditorium looking out to the park. The Museum provides entertainment for the Passengers and education about the city of Kinmen both Past and Future, via ongoing shows and lectures/films/documentaries. Simultaneously it provides the city with a place to visit and learn more about Maritime business and history.

The Building Design is driven by the “arching” movement of the volume over the extended Park/Piazza, whose wave reverberates through the exterior skin and shapes the exterior volumes and internal programmatic requirements. The idea of duality (Left and Right, Domestic and International Wings, Park side/Sea side, Arrivals/Departures ) is carried through the building form as it shapes the interior spaces. In particular the building is split by a longitudinal “spine” which organizes a north and south section. The north areas favor the Sea side and host the waiting areas and departures gates, the south areas host all public functions (shopping, retail, offices) and access to the Museum component. The longitudinal spine is created by a “Glass Canyon”, which brings natural diffuse light to all levels of the building, yet emphasizes the tall space of the Arrival Halls.

Conceived as an environmentally friendly building the Terminal has large glass openings to the north side and a smaller amount of glass on the south side. This will increase the amount of diffuse light within the space (thus reducing lighting and cooling consumption) and limit the amount of over heating from direct southern exposure. The Glass Canyon and Covered Piazza also allow for natural air circulation and intense heat and humidity dispersion, while also providing natural shade and glare protection for arriving passengers, and providing a better energy flow in and around the Building.

The Building program is organized into three main sections: 1) Passenger Access Spaces 2) Waiting and Commercial Spaces 3) Cultural and Exhibition Areas 1) The Passenger Access areas are functionally organized over the first two levels (Ground Floor and Level +12m). The ground floor on each side of the Central Piazza has the Arrivals, the Second level the Departures. Ancillary cafes and retail spaces are built around these areas to promote a culture of comfort and ease especially for short term and direct transfer travelers. 2) On Levels 3 (+24 m), 4 (+30m), 5 (+36m) are located the VIP and long term waiting areas, which offer passengers in transit and waiting for a few hours the comfort necessary to enjoy their stay.

These areas include larger shopping and store areas, cafes, high end restaurants, lounges, resting and bathing areas, exercise rooms and business lounges. 3) Lastly, the Exhibition spaces, located within the Museum volume extending over the park are also accessible for the Passengers and will host several different “curated” shows. This will be a unique opportunity for International and Foreign Passengers to learn about the history, culture, heritage and art of Kinmen and bring this knowledge and information to other countries and cities around the world.
