PERTAMINA ENERGY TOWER BY SOM

The dramatic centerpiece of a new consolidated headquarters created for the Indonesian state-owned energy company, the Pertamina Energy Tower will rise more than 500 meters above Jakarta as a stunning new landmark on the capital’s skyline.

Complemented by a performing arts and exhibition pavilion, a mosque, and a central energy plant, the 99-story "beacon of energy" will represent a new standard for sustainable development, bringing together 20,000 employees on its innovative, dynamic campus.

Following SOM's holistic design approach that integrates architectural design, structural engineering, and sustainable engineering services, Pertamina Energy Tower is the world’s first supertall tower for which energy is the primary design driver. Sustainable strategies at the core of its design are exposed in its simple profile yet sophisticated architectural expression.

Gently tapering towards a rounded top, the tower opens up at the crown, revealing a ‘wind funnel’ that will take advantage of the prevailing winds and increased wind speeds at the upper floors to generate energy. Precisely calibrated for Jakarta’s proximity to the equator, the tower’s curved facade will mitigate solar heat gain throughout the year.

Exterior sun shades will dramatically improve the workplace environment and save energy by reducing the need for artificial lighting in the office interiors. Overall, the development will reduce water demand and target zero discharge while reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 26% by the year 2020 and generating 25% energy from renewable resources by the year 2020.

Located in Jakarta’s Rasuna Epicentrum neighborhood, the iconic campus will serve as a city within a city, blending together living, working and playing while serving as a model of sustainability, efficiency, and collaborative workplace design.

A 2,000-seat auditorium for lectures and performances and a public mosque offer vibrant public spaces and communal meeting areas, while a central energy plant will serve as the energy production hub for the campus—a literal and figurative “heart” from which energy and services will be distributed.

The "Energy Ribbon", a covered walkway that provides sun and rain protection and generates energy through photovoltaics along its roof surface, links the campus, spanning across land bridges and gardens to create an array of accessible public spaces.

ONE57 West 57th Street is Extell’s new flagship residential tower and hotel development, designed by Christian de Portzamparc, a modern glass tower will transform the famed skyline of New York City.

The project needed to solve the dual challenge of building the highest residential tower in New York during an emerging economic crisis on a highly irregular site. The lots finally acquired by the promoter form an « L » shape.

Christian de Portzamparc draws on this complexity to provide the main thrust of his design. The result is a composition of geometric forms generated by the city’s alignment regulations, the air rights specific to this site, and by structural requirements.

Each vertical element culminates in curved forms which either shelter terraces with views on Central Park or collide with the main core.

The form designed to accentuate the vertiginous upward move- ment of the tower terminates in a gesture with the same form, offering a recognizable silhouette on the New York skyline.

A vertical pattern of contrasting stripes comprised of two different glass types (with uniform visibility from the interior distinguish both north and south façades and evoke the energetic cascade of New York’s verticality.

In contrast the lateral sides of the form evoke a « Klimt-like » pattern that fluctuates with the constantly changing light exposure.

This variation in theme was a necessity designed to contrast the perpendicular sides, emphasizing the polarity of the work, a key parameter generated by its views over Central Park.

PARRAMATTA SQUARE – STAGES 5 & 6 TOWERS BY ESAN RAHMANI ARCHITECTS

Our proposal for the Parramatta’s stage 5 & 6 commercial towers aims at integrating the towers within the urban fabric of the city by favouring retention of existing public access through the site and providing the city of Parramatta new public destinations.

The design favours two separate towers which allow unobstructed public access from the public promenade to the Parramatta train station. The building separation between the two towers is increased after 15 storeys to maximise daylight to all offices and reduce over shadowing by one another greatly reducing the need for artificial lighting during day time.

In the broader context the towers are linked into the urban fabric by making the top 4 levels of each tower being public and accessed via glass lifts separate from the private access.

The public levels provide sky bars, restaurants, exclusive retail shops as well as a semi-enclosed public garden with sunbathing decks and pool.

This strategy is to make parts of the building public is to balance the private gain in wealth with public benefits by seeking to enhance public life by providing unique activities and destinations for the city of Parramatta.

Being the first of two skyscrapers in the city we found the tops of the towers presented themselves as the most interesting destination that the public would want to visit.

The design concept is based on different intersections between lines which have been stimulated from the movement of a human carrying a rock as an indication of the labour and toil being a builder, an architect.

These intersections are meeting to be the window’s frames of the building which unite the continuity of the horizontal and the vertical visual expressions of the design, mending the boundaries between the inside space of the building and the outside space making the façade a dynamic focal point to the most important aspects of the city.

As the structure is the giver of light it creates a character through the building to the outside space, a contrast between lights and shadows, each space is a unique entity itself yet it gives the feeling of lingering, moving from room to room would leave one space and even though entering another, there would be an enduring trace of the one you had entered a moment ago.

It also works as an element of stability against any occurred earth quacks. The project design is a tower consists of two basements and 20 stories of a height of 73m above ground level.

The proposed structural system of shear walls and surrounding composite sections connecting the external walls to the skeletal facade of the building creating a wrap which is constructed of steel and concrete joint together in sections of 110-180cm, depth 40cm.

215 WEST 57TH STREET BY ADRIAN SMITH + GORDON GILL ARCHITECTURE

Extell Development announced late last year that the project, disegned by AdrianSmith + Gordon Gill Architecture which is located at 215 West 57th Street in New York City, would reach a height of 1,550 feet.

The 88-story tower at 215 West 57th Street will be one of New York City’s tallest buildings, 100 feet taller than the Empire State Building, making it the second-tallest building in New York City behind SOM’s One World Trade Center.

Adrian Smith is no stranger to designing soaring skyscrapers—he designed Dubai’s Burj Khalifa while working at SOM, still the tallest tower in the world.

Extell is also developing another West 57th tower, One57, this one designed by Christian De Portzamparc, which before the announcement of 215 was to be the city’s tallest residential tower at 1,004 feet.
