Guest Curating: I Blogged a Week on the Burnaway Tumblr

Merry Christmas.

Today ends my week as guest curator on the Burnaway Blog. I'd be grateful if you went over and had a look. If you do Tumblr, maybe you can do some reblogging. If you've never seen Tumblr - well - this is your chance.

Cecil Touchon at Kinkos?

I was doing my downtown Atlanta errands today and spotted this in the mezzanine of the Equitable Building.


My brain said, "What is a Cecil Touchon collage doing in Kinkos (now FedEx Office)?" Here are some of the real things from Emily Amy Gallery

They Ran Around the Cemetery!

The elite crew of the Architecture Tourist Sporting Society got up early to watch loved ones run Atlanta's Thanksgiving Half Marathon.


Of course we don't go anywhere without enjoying the built scenery, in this case the gate of Oakland Cemetery at Mile 11. It's an entry that's an exit.


This is rarely a lively place. But on this morning we had sweaty irony.


The runners turned tombstone corner.


The loved ones arrived, stumbled and headed for the finish to the tune of "Cowbell."


I'm pretty sure the spectators - Syd, Nick, Elizabeth, Katherine - enjoyed it just as much as the runners.

Zen View - Atlantic Center from Peachtree and Ellis Streets

Atlantic Center is what we used to call the IBM building at 14th and West Peachtree. It's beautiful but the key point for Architecture Tourists is viewing while driving north on West Peachtree Street. I think the sighted the building for that view even at the price of height. The lot is at lower evelvation that one on Peachtree Street.

But that's not what this post is about. You are driving north on Peachtree from Little Five Points. You pass the Georgia Pacific Building on your right, finnally cresting the highest point in downtown Atlanta: Peachtree at Ellis Street at the old Davison's department store. Dead ahead is your Zen view of Atlantic Center. The view only lasts a few blocks.


Did you know that Atlantic Center is on the site of the first Mellow Mushroom Pizza joint?

Pershing Point Park as a park and destination?

The trash cans were full but I've never seen any people there. I felt like a pioneer. My friend Jerry Phillips (R.I.P) used the live in some apartments there. Not in the Pershing Point apartments but just south of them in the same block. I'd love to find a picture.

Quite well landscaped and cozy.

Looking north to the curvy Ivesco Building. Buck Crook's Rhodes Center is the modest white building on the left. Rhodes Hall is just behind.


The silhouette has a silhouette.


I guess he's looking at the Mastermind thinker dude.


The Winnwood Apartments is a reminder of the classic days of Pershing Point architecture.


South on Peachtree towards Colony Square and the Reid House.

Zen Views - Colony Square from the inside out.

Colony Square has a sky lit courtyard, without the yard of course. It has great views bot do with your sandwhich. Ride the escalator to the 2nd floor and go out on the roof and balcony to extend yor views.

The Proscenium never looked better than from inside Colony Square.


Promenade II roofline is a modern gothic cathedral.

Metalwork - Atlanta Appeals Courthouse

The Elbert P. Tuttle U.S. Court of Appeals Building has a backside too with a beautiful metal arch in green. I'm not the first to take a picture The street is blocked off and isn't on the way to anywhere but you can walk the street. You get a peek of the Healey Building above the roof.




It's in keeping with the top of the cornice:

Atlanta bloggers at Mitchell Gold+Bob Williams book signing

Mitchell Gold and Bob Williams did a book signing on Tuesday, November 17 at their Buckhead store. I met some bloggers too. A great evening, great space, great hosts. You can make the pictures bigger if you want, click the picture, then "All sizes."

I didn't know it at the time but Atlanta blogger/designer Cristi Holcombe of Charm Home blog was also there. Cristi's design company is also named Charm Home. Cristi blogged the about the event. She's wearing the black and white dress below.



Claire Watkins, Atlanta blogger, High Gloss Blue got there after I left. Sorry I missed you. Her firm is Claire Watkins Interior Design, CWID. Claire blogged the signing here.





I enjoyed this red coat vignette, coordinating with the pillows and lampshades.



It was quite a nice event. Thanks to Mitchell Gold+Bob Williams the company, to Mitchell and Bob themselves, and to Niki, Cristi, Mark and Claire.

There are a bunch more pictures. I wish we'd gathered everybody for a group shot, maybe next time.
